Have you ever heard the saying, “you eat your lipstick throughout the day?” Well, it’s true. And over a lifetime, estimates total up to about four pounds.

Lip products have been blamed for transmitting all sorts of awful chemicals into the body including: lead, parabens, petro chemicals (chemicals derived from petroleum) and phthalates. According to the EWG: The Environmental Protection Agency states that all parabens — methyl, propyl, butyl — have been proved to interfere with the function of the endocrine system, and these endocrine disruptors are stored in our body’s fatty tissues . . .contributing to reproductive and developmental disorders, learning problems and immune system dysfunction in children.

So why eat awful, harmful parabens? Especially when you can coat your lips in smackable, kissable, completely scrumptious: lime rocket, sweet orange, creamy cocoa, cool mint, mocha cocoa or creamy cocoa. W. S. It’s a new year, a fresh start, time for a change. And speaking of change, I am so pleased to notice little hints everyday indicative of the shifts towards a greener world.

Even commercial convenience stores like Walgreens and Target now provide many natural, paraben free beauty products, and new lines are being released all the time that–surprise!–do not contain parabens. It inspires a healthy dose of hope to see that companies are “getting it,” and looking for other ways to formulate, paraben free ways.

And then, there are all of the brands and products that have been around for years which have been busy quietly reformulating. Sure New Coke didn’t get away with, but many a beauty company has. To this I say, well, at least they’re listening: parabens are bad, parabens have been linked to cancer, parabens have been linked to infertility.

My recommendations: be aware, check your labels. Trust no product–until you’ve checked the label. Even certain huge beauty “monopolies” who back certain cancer groups still sneak icky, awful parabens into their products. So wait–they’re raising awareness to fight cancer, but also potentially causing it–YEP.
