The Not So Pretty Truth About Parabens

Unless you are already scanning your personal care product labels for any of the most common toxic ingredients, you will likely find at least one ingredient on each of your product labels that ends in “paraben.”

Why weed out these synthetic microbials used to prevent a product from a bacterial overgrowth, such as mold?

Simply put, parabens mess with your body’s endocrine system, store themselves in your fatty tissue, and have shown possible links to breast cancer. (SOURCE: EWG)

Don’t feel badly if you are only just realizing this. Historically, neither did the major cosmetics manufacturers. Even green giant Aveda contained parabens in their “natural” products as recently as one year ago. But like many manufacturers, large and small, they began phasing them out, quietly.

Now that you are ready to raid your medicine cabinet and make-up bag, do not despair. Stores like WholeFoods, Pharmaca and Elephant Pharmacy all offer many wonderful, paraben free alternaives. Or you can search online, popular e-tailer SkinBotanica.com, whose products “do not contain parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, fragrances or dyes.”
